The college was established in 1984; so was the Department of English – established in the same year. The past is not long, not highly illustrious either. Nevertheless, it can boast of its past performance, of its teacher-taught relationship and of its growth within the limits of an undergraduate Department.
Given the University syllabus, the Department puts things in the larger perspective of culture and tries to make them attractive by a number of techniques employed alongside the traditional lecture method. Interactive sessions, for example, punctuate the audio-visual shows of the literary texts. Invited talks and interactions, students’ seminars and question-answer sessions – all such academic activities of the Department involve the students in an inspiring process of learning. On a regular basis, they enjoy variety because of the varied members of the Faculty and their varied ways of teaching. Further variety is added when new members join the Faculty on transfer and/or on appointment.
A proposal is in the process of being made for setting up a language laboratory. This obviously is designed for the development of four language skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing, meant chiefly for the students underdeveloped in respect to language skills and those who need to use English for all practical purposes in their careers in the future. The students of the other Departments than English are to be welcomed here for special training.
