AnOverview

Department of Physics, Bidhannagar College had started its teaching courses only in Honours since
1987. Initially, the college was under University of Calcutta but it went under West Bengal State
University (WBSU), Barasat, since 2008. The department is running the semester system under NEP
2020 curriculum as prescribed by parent university WBSU from the academic year 2023-24. Currently
the students’ intake in the first semester Physics major course is 63.
The Physics Department has well equipped Laboratories -General Physics & Heat, Optics,
Electronics, containing many valuable and sensitive modern instruments which are very helpful for the
Undergraduate students. The department has a computer Laboratory connected with internet facilities
for computational courses in curriculum. Enriched Seminar Library with several text and reference
books of eminent authors are being very helpful for the students and faculty. The overall performance
of the students in University examinations are found satisfactory. Many of our students passing out
from this college have a very good placement records in various organizations and institutions.
The Department has a regular Academic Calendar that consists of (i) a regular class routine (ii)
Assessment of students like regular college exams, home works, parent teachers’ meeting etc. (iii)
cultural programmes being regularly held in the dept. (iv) involvement of students in different
academic activities like attending seminars, visiting research institutes etc.
This department has an academic tie up with eminent research institutes and colleges. Science
seminars in collaboration with them are being organized on regular basis in this department. Eminent
speakers like Prof. Ashok Sen (HRI), Allahabad, Prof. Palash Baran Pal (SINP), Kolkata, Prof.
Sanatan Chattopadhyay (CU) , Prof. Ashoknath Basu, former Vice Chancellor of JU, Prof. Usha
Mallik, Emeritus Professor , Department of Physics, Iowa University, USA and Prof. D. N. Basu, Homi
Bhabha National Institute Mumbai etc graced us with their lectures.
At present the Department has one non-teaching staff and five (5) Academic Staff in numbers. The
faculty members have been regularly attending different National/International Seminars, workshops,
Science Congress, and also served the Universities in the capacity of head examiners, examiners,
paper setters, moderators, member of UG Board of studies of Universities etc. The current and ex
faculties from this department have attended various seminars workshops as resource persons,
invited speakers etc., they have served as referee for different international journals. The faculty
members have a high level of diverse research interest reflecting through regular publications in
journals of international repute.
