The department of Botany began its journey as a general course under the University of Calcutta in 1997, with one full-time teacher, two-part timers and one laboratory-bearer. In 2002, Honours course was opened after the requisite infrastructures were built up and more teachers were posted. The number of teaching posts presently are eight and non-teaching is two. Since 2008, the department is affiliated to the West Bengal State University. The post graduate course was approved in 2018 with the intake capacity of 15 students and begun from the academic session 2019-20. Three batches of students have successfully completed the master degree course.
At present, there are seven faculty members in the department. All the faculty members have vast teaching and research experience in the diverse fields of Plant Sciences. All together there has been 13 publications in reputed national and international journals in the last five years. The total floor space of the department is 3700 sq. ft. (approx.) spreading over 1st floor and 2nd floor of the old building. It includes three theory class rooms - equipped with LCD projector and sound system, two general laboratory, one biochemistry laboratory, one genetics laboratory, seminar library, one specimen room and one store room. The department possesses 3 computers, 2 laptops and 2 printers with internet connections. There are number of instruments for routine practical classes as well as research. Some of the important instruments are - DNA and Protein Gel Electrophoresis unit, Camera fitted Microscope, Laminar air flow, BOD incubator, Seed germinator, Centrifuge, digital balance. There are also plenty of simple and compound microscopes, besides two Binocular microscopes.
The department has a well-stocked Seminar library with 410 books and all the books are systematically arranged and catalogued, besides over 400 books in the Central library. There are more than hundred museum specimens (both wet and dry) belonging to lower group as well as higher group of plants. Besides, there is Herbarium containing 256 Herbarium sheets. A medicinal plant garden (approx. 550 m 2 ) is present in the college campus with many important medicinal plants.
The department regularly carries out National level seminar and Workshop, invited talks, Lectures, Parent-Teacher meets and Botanical excursions. Besides, the students are encouraged to participate in debates, workshops, laboratory visits, wall magazine writing, games-sports, cultural and other extracurricular activities both in and outside the campus. Several students have done well in their personal and professional lives to merit mention.
